Graduate Teaching Assistant The department administers sixteen graduate teaching assistantships and frequently has additional research assistantships available. Assistantships include a stipend (currently $11,500 for nine months), a tuition waiver for nine credits per semester, and a health insurance plan (50% of the premiums are covered by the assistantship). Assistantships are awarded on a yearly basis. If performance in the assistantship is excellent and if the student is making satisfactory academic progress, then the assistantship will be renewed for a second year. Teaching assistants are assigned half-time teaching duties (under the supervision of an experienced member of the staff) or given other duties in the program. Teaching assistants in the Communication area may teach in basic Interpersonal Communication, Public Communication, and Oral Communication of Literature courses. Assistants in the Mass Communication area may serve as teaching assistants in the Introduction to Mass Communication, Writing for the Mass Media, Radio News Practicum, Techniques of Video Production, and Advanced Electronic Reporting and Production courses. Normally, assistantship applications are considered only after the candidate has submitted all application materials and has been accepted into the program.
