UNDERGRADUATE AWARDS

Each year the faculty in Communication and Journalism honor outstanding undergraduate students with four awards. The names of the students are inscribed on plaques mounted in the main office (Dunn 420). Each awardee receives a framed award certificate and a book gift for the University of Maine bookstore. The awards are presented at the department graduation reception in May.

Award Plaque

The Wofford Gardner Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement In Communication.

During his years as department head (1949-1975), Wofford Gardner championed and developed what was then called "Speech." The Gardner Award honors academic excellence in the communication major and in overall course work.

The Brooks Hamilton Spirit of Excellence Award.

Brooks Hamilton was the founding presence shaping the Department of Journalism for 33 years (1952-1985). He is best known for his work writing Maine's freedom-of-access statute (its "right-to-know" law) and for his journalistic integrity and "curmudgeon" image. The Brooks Hamilton award honors his spirit of excellence.

The Raymie McKerrow Award for Distinguished Undergraduate Student in Communication.

Raymie McKerrow achieved the highest faculty award, the Maine Distinguished Professor Award, during his twenty-year tenure at the University of Maine (1976-1996). His outstanding scholarship, teaching, and service also brought national visibility to Maine. The Raymie McKerrow Award is presented to a student who achieves excellence both within and outside of the classroom.

The Outstanding Graduating Senior in Journalism and Mass Communication Award.

Each year, this award is given to the student who is most distinguished for academic achievement in Journalism and Mass Communication.
